Ikhfaa' Haqiqi
Ikhfaa' [إخفاء] means hiding, linguistically.
This means to hide the "n" sound of the noon saakinah or the tanween by not pronouncing it clearly from its makhraj, and instead making a vague nasal sound.
Ikhfaa's letters: ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك or more easily remembered as "all the Arabic letters after excluding the letters of Idhaar Halqi, Idghaam, and Iqlab.
Its rule: Whenever a noon saakinah [ن] or tanween [ ً ٍ ٌ] is followed by an ikhfaa' letter, we will hide the sound of noon by placing our tongue near the makhraj of the ikhfaa' letter- instead of the makhraj of noon- with 2 counts of ghunnah. The ghunnah will take on a tarqeeq [light] quality if the ikhfaa' letter is a tarqeeq letter; and a tafkheem [heavy] quality if the ikhfaa' letter is a tafkheem letter.
Ikhfaa's tarqeeq letters are 10: ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ف ك
Thus the ghunnah will have a tarqeeq- light, thin- quality.
Ikhfaa's tafkheem letters are 5: ص ض ط ظ ق
Thus the ghunnah will have a tafkheem- heavy, thick- quality.
Note: A future lesson will cover this topic of Tafkheem & Tarqeeq more extensively, in-shaa-Allah.
This is the fourth and last rule of the Rules of Noon Saakinah & Tanween.
