Tajweed Lesson 4: The Ways of Isti'adha & Basmalah

The way of reading Isti'adha & Basmalah at the beginning of the surah:

1. Cut all.

If, for example, we are beginning a recitation with surah Al-Asr using this method, we will read it like this:

"A'oodhubillahi-mina-shaytaani-rajeem. [Pause with a breath.] Bismillahi-rahmani-raheem. [Pause with a breath.] Wal-Asr."

2. Join all.

To recite all three together without any pause in-between. We will read the ending of the Isti'adha and Basmalah with a kasrah, like:

"A'oodhubillahi-mina-shaytaani-rajeemi-Bismillahi-rahmani-raheemi-Wal-Asr."

3. Cut and then join.

To recite the Isti'adha, pause with a breath, and then recite the Basmalah and the first ayah of the surah by joining them together. Like:

"A'oodhubillahi-mina-shaytaani-rajeem. [Pause with a breath.] Bismillahi-rahmani-raheemi-Wal-Asr."

4. Join and then cut.

To recite the Isti'adha and the Basmalah by joining them together, and then stopping with a breath before reciting the first ayah of the surah. Like:

"A'oodhubillahi-mina-shaytaani-rajeemi-Bismillahi-rahmani-raheem. [Pause with a breath.] Wal-Asr."

The way of starting a recitation in the middle of a surah: [meaning from the 2nd ayah onwards].

As the only rule for the Basmalah is to say it at the beginning of the surah, there is no need to say it in the middle of the surah. This is why we have two options:

  • Option A): With both Isti'adha & Basmalah.

  • Option B) With Isti'adha only.

Option A) with both Isti'adha & Basmalah.

1. Cut all.

We will read it in the exact same way as we would if we were beginning the surah with Isti'adha & Basmalah [which are listed above] but instead of reading the 1st ayah of the surah, over here it will be any ayah coming after the 1st.

For surah Al-Asr, an example would be the 2nd ayah: إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ

2. Join all.

Again, please note to add a kasrah to the ends of the Isti'adha and Basmalah when joining them to the next sentence.

3. Cut and then join.

So we will take a pause with a breath after the Isti'adha, and then continue reciting the Basmalah with any ayah in the middle of the surah that you choose to begin with, by joining them together.

4. Join and then cut.

We will join the Isti'adha and the Basmalah together, pause and take a breath, and then begin any ayah in the middle of the surah that you choose.

[*Option A) Starting with Isti'adha & Basmalah in the middle of a surah, and starting with Isti'adha & Basmalah at the beginning of a surah, are exactly the same.

It only depends on whether the ayah coming after the Basmalah is the 1st ayah of the surah, or any ayah following it.]

Option B) with Isti'adha only:

1. Cut all.

We recite the Isti'adha, pause and take a breath, and then start any ayah in the middle of the surah.

2. Join all.

We join the Isti'adha to any ayah in the middle of the surah without any pause or breath in-between.

[End of Lesson.]
