The Ways of Reading Between 2 Surahs With Basmalah:
1. Cut all.
As we know, at the end of every surah there is an ayah which completes the surah. Then after that last ayah is the Basmalah to start the next surah with. The first way to read between these two surahs is to cut these three from each other:
An example we can use would be to read between surah Al-Ikhlaas and surah Al-Falaq:
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ
Pause and take a breath.
﷽
Pause and take a breath.
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ
Continue on with the surah.
NOTE: whenever we stop at the end of an ayah, we must stop on the last letter with sukoon. If we choose to continue instead, then we cannot recite the last letter with sukoon and we must recite its harakah.
For example: الْفَلَقْ with sukoon in stopping, and الْفَلَقِ with kasrah in continuing.
2. Join all.
To join all 3- the last ayah of Al-Ikhlaas, the Basmalah, and the first ayah of Al-Falaq- without pauses or breath in-between.
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ ﷽ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ
NOTE: Remember to add in the appropriate harakaat/vowels and Tajweed rules whenever continuing from the end of an ayah.
The Basmalah will be read with a kasrah at the end in continuing.
3. Cut, and then join.
To recite the last ayah of Al-Ikhlaas, stop and take a breath, and then recite the Basmalah by joining it with the first ayah of Al-Falaq.
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ/ ﷽ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ
These are the only three ways of reciting between 2 surahs with Basmalah.
The 4th option, which we see in the ways of reciting Isti'adha & Basmalah, is not allowed.
The forbidden way: Join, and then cut.
This would be to join the last ayah of the surah with the Basmalah, and then stop and take a breath before continuing into first ayah of the next surah.
In this way, people may hear the Basmalah as the last ayah of the surah. This would lead any listeners into misunderstanding, so we are not allowed to recite between two surahs like this.
The Ways of Reciting Between surah Al-Anfaal and surah At-Tawbah.
The rule of Basmalah is that it has to be recited at the beginning of every surah, hence why we have the 3 options of reciting between 2 surahs as mentioned above. However, there is an exception: we are not allowed to say the Basmalah for surah At-Tawbah.
There are 3 ways:
1. Waqf [stopping.]
We recite the last ayah of Al-Anfaal, stop and take a breath, and then continue straightaway to the first ayah of At-Tawbah.
2. Wasl [joining.]
We join the last ayah of Al-Anfaal to the first ayah of At-Tawbah with the correct and appropriate Tajweed rules.
3. Sakt [breathless pause.]
The sakt is a pause we make without taking in any breath. It is also indicated in the س in { وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍۢ } of surah Al-Qiyamah, for example.
Whenever we see this small س in the Qur'an, we are meant to make sakt here.
As for joining between Al-Anfaal and At-Tawbah with sakt:
It will sound exactly the same as Waqf; the only difference is that we will not be taking in any breath for sakt.
[End of lesson.]
